Sometimes a little short story can grow into a novel or even a trilogy of novels–if you have a character who just keeps growing. Three of the stories below have morphed into novels.

An Act of Kindness This story is Harry Jenkins’ debut. Harry, a lawyer, was interesting and strong enough to carry a whole trilogy of suspense novels in The Osgoode Trilogy.

Fleeting Moments Alexander Wainwright is Britain’s finest landscape painter. This short story is Alex’s first appearance. It took a long time to get to know him, but his story developed into The Trilogy of Remembrance, two thirds of which is written. The third is a work in progress.

The Thief Celia Smith made her first appearance in this short story. You will find her as a major character in The Drawing Lesson.

The Life She Wanted Have you heard of the NaNoWriMo writing contest? In one month you have to write a novel of at least 50,000 words. I used this short story as the basis for my novel for NaNoWriMo this past June entitled Why Can’t a Philosopher Bake a Cake?

The Ice House This is the very first short story I wrote years ago. I have used it to develop a novel much less a trilogy, but you never know! If you think the little girl and her brother are interesting enough for that, let me know.

Rinaldo’s Art Project  The Trilogy of Remembrance character Rinaldo has spawned several short stories and continues to surprise me by suggesting that he has a story of his own waiting to be told.
